What Is Non-Surgical Endodontics?

Endodontists are frequently able to treat common conditions using non-surgical treatments, such as root canal therapy. Non-surgical endodontics may also involve correcting or completing previous treatments that were incomplete or unsuccessful.

Benefits of Non-Surgical Endodontics

Non-surgical endodontics offers a variety of benefits to patients, such as:

  • Relieving pain
  • Preserving teeth
  • Reduced risk of infection or bone loss
  • Bone preservation
  • Correcting problems that developed as a result of previous root canals
  • Quicker healing time
  • Greater comfort during treatment and recovery

Procedures Offered

Non-surgical endodontics treatments and procedures we provide include:
Root Canal Treatment

Non-surgical root canal treatment is provided to save severely decayed or infected teeth. This is done by removing the pulp of the tooth, thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the canals in the tooth, and sealing the tooth with a biocompatible material.

Our root canal specialists use technologically advanced techniques and devices to ensure a successful treatment. Technology and techniques used include the use of high power dental microscopes, 3D digital radiography, irrigant activation (with ozone if requested), apex location, and ultrasonic devices.

Endodontic Retreatment

Teeth that have previously been treated with a root canal sometimes develop new problems. If so, an endodontic retreatment can often correct the problem and preserve the tooth.

Pulpal Regeneration

Pulpal regeneration is an innovative technique that uses tissue engineering in young patients to treat underdeveloped tooth roots. The goal of pulpal regeneration is to restore the root canals to a healthy state, preventing the need for a root canal.

Thanks to new technologies such as the GentleWave Procedure and Ozone Therapy this technique can now be done on some adults, as well.

Frequently Asked Questions About Non-Surgical Endodontics

What symptoms indicate I need a root canal?
Tooth pain is the most common sign that you need a root canal. Your pain may be fairly severe and may be worse when chewing. Your tooth might also be very sensitive to extreme temperatures. While tooth pain is the most common sign that you need a root canal, many teeth progress to pulp necrosis (a condition requiring a root canal) without the patient experiencing pain.
What conditions require root canal treatment?
If you crack a tooth, break a tooth, or experience another such dental emergency, you may need to undergo root canal treatment.
Will I experience discomfort during root canal treatment?
We leverage various tools and techniques to mitigate your discomfort during treatment. Contrary to what many patients believe, a root canal no longer has to be an uncomfortable procedure.
How do I know if endodontic retreatment is necessary?
Endodontic retreatment may be necessary if you’ve already undergone an endodontic procedure but are still experiencing symptoms.
When might the endodontist suggest pulpal regeneration treatment?
Pulpal regeneration may be an option for young patients when a tooth is immature, and the roots are undeveloped. It is used to strengthen the root as it develops to avoid the need for a root canal. In adults with fully developed roots, this technique is used to preserve or regenerate pulp tissue that has been damaged by decay or trauma, avoiding the need for root canal therapy. Please ask if you might be a candidate for this procedure.
