What Is Surgical Endodontics?

An endodontist is a specialist treating conditions and injuries affecting the dental pulp and surrounding tissues. When all non-surgical treatments fail to successfully treat an endodontic condition, surgery may be required.

Fortunately, most endodontic surgeries are minimally invasive, and all are performed in our state-of-the-art practice without requiring hospitalization. Successful endodontic surgery, such as an apicoectomy, will relieve patient discomfort and can save a tooth from extraction.

Benefits of Surgical Endodontics

Surgical endodontic procedures offer benefits such as:

  • Pain relief
  • Tooth preservation
  • Eradicating infection
  • Reducing risks of worsening oral health

Apicoectomy at North County Endodontics

Apicoectomy, also known as apical surgery, root-end resection, or root tip surgery, is performed by our endodontic specialists at North County Endodontics. An apicoectomy is necessary when the end of the root (called the apex) becomes inflamed or infected.

During this minimally invasive surgery, a small incision in the gum is made to access the tip of the root. The tip and any inflamed or infected tissue surrounding it are removed. A tiny biocompatible filling is placed at the tip of the root to prevent reinfection. The incision is then sutured, and the surgery is complete.

You may need an apicoectomy if you’ve previously had a root canal but are still experiencing symptoms like dental pain in the affected area.

How long does healing take after an apicoectomy?
Although every patient is different, it typically takes two weeks for the surgical site to fully heal. However, it may take up to six months for the bone surrounding the root tip to fully heal.
